HELPFUL DEFINITIONS
PHYSICAL ABUSE:
Slapping; shaking; scratching; squeezing; hitting, beating with boards, sticks, belts, kitchen utensils, yardsticks, electric cords; shovels; hoses; throwing; pushing; shoving; slamming against walls or objects; burning; scalding; freezing; forcing food or water; starving; having to watch others physically abused; overworking.
SEXUAL ABUSE:
A person has been sexually abused if he or she is forced into any sexual acts for which consent has not been given.
EMOTIONAL ABUSE:
When a person has been insulted; humiliated; degraded; intimidated through actions, facial expressions, or tone of voice; threatened; treated like a servant or slave; controlled; or accomplishments and strengths have been discounted.
INFORMATION:
Family Haven serves over 900 victims - women, men and children a year for the six counties served. Because of unreported cases, the actual number of batterings approaches a far greater number than those who Family Haven serves.
No person shall be denied the services of Family Haven based on age, gender, race, socioeconomic class, religion, handicap or any other discriminating category.
