Technology Safety
Online safety for abuse victims is being urged by abuse agencies. Abuse victims using a computer to search the Internet for help are taking the risk of being monitored by their abuser. Today’s inexpensive, off-the-shelf technology allows abusers to install software that enables them to retrace online activity, including web sites which have been visited. Software programs designed to protect children by monitoring their Web use can also be used to monitor a victim’s use of the Internet. Tracking devices in automobiles, such as OnStar, can be used to track a victim’s location through the satellite network. Abuse victims are requested not to drive vehicles, with such devices installed, to the shelters. OnStar, a tracking device to monitor a vehicle for safety purposes if stolen, break downs or even car crashes also can be used to track the cars location in advent of being stolen, this is how an abuser can track the cars location. The OnStar service has been cooperative in not passing on information when a victim contacts them.
A victim of abuse must take the first step in keeping themselves safe by remembering to not leave a trail for someone to follow. The Victim’s personal safety is the foremost concern of Family Haven.
